Finally, antigen presenting cells play an important role in the induction of tolerance. Dendritic cells can either initiate T-cell activation and proliferation or promote peripheral  tolerance through the deletion of autoreactive T cells, depending on their maturation state. Tolerance is induced when antigens are presented by immature dendritic cells and these cells also play a role in the generation and maintenance of Treg.
