For most people a fistula is the best option for hemodialysis access, but for some people this may not be possible. The alternatives are:
- Arteriovenous graft - This is where a piece of synthetic tubing is placed under the skin to join the artery and vein
- Hemodialysis line - This is where a piece of synthetic tubing is inserted into one of the large veins, usually in the neck
