What are the risk?

There are some risks to having an arteriovenous fistula:
  • Bleeding-The fistula may bleed; occacionally a blood transfusion may be needed
  • Infection-A  wound infection may develop; this can be treated with antibiotics
  • The fistula may block and stop working; this may require further surgery
  • Swelling in the fistula arm following surgery-It is important to move the arm as much as possible. This movement may help swelling to resolve, and will prevent the arm from becoming stiff
  • Loss of feeling in hand/or fingers-This due to a reduced blood flow to your hand
