Basic components of the immune system part 71

Lectin pathway

The third pathway of complement activation is  created by the mannose-binding lectin (MBL), a circulating protein  that binds to carbohydrate on the surface of many microorganisms. MBL (structurally related to C1q) activates complement through a serine protease known as MBL-associated serine protease. Deficiency in circulating levels of MBL are associated with frequent infections in childhood.
