Finally, CD19 deficiency has been described in two families  with CVID. CD 19 is a B-cell accessory molecule that is required for B-cell activation, proliferation, and hence B-cell development. CD19-/- mice exhibit hypogammaglubulinemia and poor antibody responses to protein antigens.

In the case of the large majority of patients with CVID, the underlying molecular defect is unknown.
