In order for you to undergo hemodialysis, the hemodialysis team need to get access to your blood stream so that the dialysis machine can clean your blood. There is evidence from many studies to suggest that an arteriovenous fistula is the best form of vascular access (access to the blood stream) for haemodialysis. An arteriovenous fistula is likely to last longer, and you are likely to have fewer complications (such as infections) than with other types of vascular access
