What medications can your child get if they were with another person who had chickenpox?
If your child is exposed to someone with chickenpox or shingles, they may need medication to help prevent infection or make infection milder if it does develop.
Several types of medications may be used, including doses of varicella antibodies (by a needle) and oral or intravenous (IV) forms of the antiviral medication acyclovir.
Some of these medications need to be given as soon as possible after exposure to chickenpox to have the best chance of helping. Even if a child receives one of these presentative medications (medications to prevent the disease from developing), it is still possible that they may match the virus. Chickenpox can develop between 10 and 28 days after being exposed to someone with the disease.
