Administration of blood for transfusion during dialysis

Administration of blood for transfusion during dialysis:
  • Administer all blood transfusions via the arterial port in the dialysis blood circuit. This ensures it passed through the dialyser removing some of the additional potassium before reaching the patient's circulation
  • Administer each unit over 45-60 minutes. Ensure dialysis continues for 30 minutes after the last unit of blood has finished
  • Administer anticoagulation as normal prescription
  • Ensure the blood volume administered is also calculated into the total fluid volume to be removed
  • Rechecking of haemoglobin if required should be performed the following day or dialysis session. An accurate result will not be obtained if sampled immidiately after transfusion
