Test used to investigate chronic kidney disease
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR):
- GFR is accepted as the best overall measure of kidney function
- eGFR (estimated GFR) is a more sensitive marker for chronic kidney disease than serum creatinine alone
- 50% of more kidney function can be lost before the serum creatine rises above the upper limit of normal
- Normal serum creatinine measurements do not exclude serious loss of kidney function
- GFR can be estimated (eGFR) from serum creatinine using prediction equations
