MESENCHYMAL STEM CELLS
Found in bone marrow, cord blood, spleen, adipose tissue, and other tissues, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a well characterized population of adult stem cells that can give rise to three main cell types, including adipocytes, chondrocytes, and osteoblasts. However, these cells may be induced experimentally to undergo differentiation into other cell types as well, such as neural cells and myogenic cells. Isolation, amplification, and large-scale in vitro culturing of MSCs good candidates for use in tissue repair. These cells can be maintained and propagated in culture for long periods, without losing their capacity to form the cell types discussed earlier.
