HLA AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES
For an efficient immune response to a pathogen to occur, HLA molecules must bind peptides derived from microbial proteins and the T cell repertoir must include clones that can be activated by such HLA-bound peptides. Non-fulfilment of either of these requirements may render a person carrying a particular combination of HLA alleles more susceptible to a particular combination of HLA alleles more susceptible to a particular infectious disease than one who has a different combination of alleles.
